We went back to school on Wednesday. We all had great days! Allie's in 2nd grade with Mr. Wagner. The same teacher Jake had. He'll be good for her. Jake is in 4th grade and has Mrs. Chambers. She is so sweet and Jake thinks the world of her. I enjoyed my day too. Didn't feel like it was a "new" job since I've worked at Hansen subbing & part of a year before. No learning curve this time. All in all, a great day for all!

GOODBYE GRANDMA
My grandmother passed away early Thursday morning. It wasn't totally unexpected, she was sick. I am still sad. She played a huge roll in my life. I grew up just 4 blocks away from her. I saw her almost daily for years. It has been a sad few days for me. She was my last living grandparent. That seems strange to me. Like it really can't be.
Some of my favorite childhood and adult memories include my grandmother. Here are a few:

Some of my favorite childhood and adult memories include my grandmother. Here are a few:
- She made the best spaghetti. Once I was married, I asked her for her recipe...there was no recipe. The sauce was made from a seasoning packet!
- Christmas at her house was the best. The cousins played and played and played.
- She used to take me shopping & to lunch. That was fun.
- She let me do her hair & make up.
- We played countless games of card & Rummikube. In fact, several months ago she passed her Rummikube game onto me.
- She came and stayed with me for several days after my grandfather passed away. She got to see Jake play soccer.
- Her basement was so fun. It was our stage, our playroom, our tent, our store & our sleepover place. I went down there last week...it hasn't changed. Not one bit!
- My grandmother had shag carpet for years. She used to let me rake it!
- Grandma made me a quilt. I love it still! She gave me a quilt rack for a shower gift.
- She used to take me to visit my great grandfather & the other "old" people in our family. We went frequently. She took care of a lot of people.
- Grandma once made me and a couple of my cousins get out and walk home. We were fighting & she actually pulled the car over & made us get out. A lesson learned the hard way.
- The last time I saw my grandmother, she was sick. I wondered if it would be the last time I'd see her. I am glad that I made that trip. I'll miss her tons!
My grandmother's legacy...her grandchildren & great grandchildren....

OKOBOJI
The kids and I spent a couple of days in Okoboji with friends. There were 4 moms and 10 kids that went. We spent the day on the boat and the evenings checking out the different places arounds the lakes. We stayed in a beautiful condo that one of the mom's family owns. What a view we had!! It was a great time.

LAKE THUNDERHEAD
On Friday night (Allie's birthday), we loaded up the car and headed down to Lake Thunderhead in Missouri. Some friends have a home there & we'd planned to spend Saturday on the lake. After a 3 hour drive we finally made it. My friend Lisa had made a birthday cake for Miss Allie, so we sang to her & enjoyed cake before heading off to bed.
We were up bright and early Saturday morning. We were on the lake by 9:30 and spent the day tubing, swimming, boating, hanging out on the beach and jet skiing. We finally came off the water after 5:00. Everyone was beat and after a little time on the docks that evening, we were in bed by 9:30! Whew!!
I actually got into a tube. For those that know me well, know that I am not a huge fan of the water. There are fish swimming & frankly I hate fish! Anyway, after I got talked into trying the tube out with Allie, I got in & got ready to go for a ride. Keep in mind that this whole situation is very upsetting to me & I'm about to have a major anxiety attack. My heart was pounding and I couldn't catch my breath. We got started out on the bumpy ride of the tube and it went ok. I had a death grip on the handles (in fact I have burn marks on my thumbs from holding on so tight). Suddenly, we stopped moving & I flipped over the top of Allie, pushing her down into the water. We were both under & I'm not sure who was more freaked out...me or Allie. Once we floated to the surface (thank God for life jackets), we held onto each other while the boat came back for us. It was the LONGEST 5 minutes of my life. Allie was screaming, I was thinking of all of those fish under my feet & we both took in lots of water so we were coughing a bit. Not pretty! I'll never, ever tube again!! Oh, did I mention my mother reminded me that there were probably dead bodies in the bottom of the lake, under all those fish. Yes, she is as big of a fan of the water as I am!!
We got up early on Sunday morning so the kids could try fishing. They last about 5 minutes. Seriously. They hated it! We headed home & hit some bad weather on the way. We hunkered down in a Hardee's until the weather cleared up.
All in all it was a fun & relaxing trip minus the tipping of the tube and my near death encounter with fish and dead bodies!!
Allie on the jet ski. She LOVED that!

HAPPY 8TH BIRTHDAY MISS ALLIE!!
Where did those 8 years go? Seriously, I was just pregnant with my youngest. My princess. My girly girl. It seems like I blinked & suddenly and 8 years are gone.

- Wasn't it just yesterday that you arrived (and I fell in love)? Weighing in at 9 pounds 8 ounces. Did I mention you were 2 weeks early?
- Wasn't it just yesterday your brother met you for the first time? He tried to poke your eyes out!
- Wasn't it just yesterday that you weren't sleeping through the night? Wait, you still sometimes show up in my room in the middle of the night!
- Wasn't it just yesterday that you took your first swimming lesson and got too deep and had to be rescued?
- Wasn't it just yesterday that you went to preschool with Mrs. Phillips, Kindergarten with Miss Pins and 1st grade with Mrs. Wyckoff?
- Wasn't it just yesterday that you learned to tie your shoe? You taught yourself!
- Wasn't it just yesterday that you learned to ride your bike? Again, taught yourself!
- Wasn't it just yesterday that you came home from preschool and stated that you learned all about "Mary, Mary Pumpkin Cherry"? (Mary, Mary Quite Contrary)
- Wasn't it just yesterday that you started ballet class? Played your first soccer game? Your first t-ball game? Your first gymnastics class?
- Wasn't it just yesterday that you decided to be an artist when you grow up?
- Wasn't it just yesterday that you threw fit after fit if you didn't get your own way? Did I mention the pouting?
Where did the time go? It just flies by! Before I know it you'll be heading off to your first school dance, your first date, you'll graduate and head off to college. You'll get married and have kiddos of your own!! I'm anxious to watch you grow, yet I wish life would slow down. Watch out world, here comes Miss Allie!!

EARLY BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS
We celebrated Allie's 8th birthday this weekend, a bit early. Her birthday is actually on Friday, but we held her "friend" party on Saturday and her "family" party on Sunday.
For Allie's friend party, she invited about 15 of her closest friends to go bowling with her. Only 9 could make it, but she still had an awesome time. Jake got to bring 2 friends along and we let some family bowl too. Ben, Maddie, Uncle Michael & even Drew got to bowl. It was a fun time.
After Al's friend party, my siblings and their families came to our house for snacks & drinks. We had a great time hanging out. Will brought his girlfriend Tesha & we were able to get to know her a little better this weekend. We really like her & hope that Will acts right so that she wants to stick around!! The kiddos played together very nicely too. All in all tons of fun!
On Sunday, my parents joined my sibs & their families along with Scott's family to celebrate. We had a nice cookout & Allie got enough gift cards to buy herself a new purple IPOD. What a day!!
Allie with her cake. She wanted sprinkles!!
Maddie & Drew hang out on a little swing

STINKY FEET
Yep, you read that right. Jacob will probably kill me for writing this entry, but oh well!! So, I took Jake to the doc today for several planter's warts that needed to be treated. The doc had advised me to attempt to take care of them between baseball and football/soccer seasons & this is our one month window. We went for the initial treatment today and as I apologized for Jake's awful and persistent case of athlete's foot, the doc mentioned that we might not be dealing with athlete's foot after all. Come to find out Jake's has a condition that is causing his feet to sweat abnormally more than the normal person. This sweating is causing his feet to become red, cracked, itching and worst of all STINKY! The treatment? He now has prescription antiperspirant for his feet. Yep, you read that right, antiperspirant for his feet. Hmmm...maybe now we can stop putting Irish Spring bars in his shoes when he's not wearing them....

WELCOME HOME
Yesterday was a busy day. We started off the morning running several errands and taking Jake to the ortho. His ortho appointment went well & nothing needs to be done yet. We'll have a follow up appointment next summer. Whew!
After errands, we went to lunch and mini golfing with friends. The kids really enjoyed mini-golf until we came upon a nest of bees. No one got stung, but we were certainly freaked out. Allie had a HUGE bumblebee land right on her chest. She was in tears, but did a great job not losing it until we got the bee off of her.
Later in the day, we went to the National Guard hanger to welcome home some local soldiers. This group was the platoon that Hansen sponsored all year and sent care packages overseas to them. A teacher at the school had her son in law return home. He landed a Black Hawk helicopter on Hansen's lawn a year ago for the whole student body to see. Several co-workers were there to support Mrs. White & her family during this joyous time! It was a really neat ceremony & a good thing for the kiddos to experience. Welcome Home Patrick & others!!

BACK TO WORK
A few weeks ago, I was offered a job at the kid's school. I accepted. I will work one on one with a 3rd grader. I worked with him 2 years ago when I was at the school and subbed with him last year. He is a neat kid & I'm sure I'll enjoy my job. The job is considered full time, which means I'll work 6.5 hours a day...the same hours the kids are in school. I am eligible for insurance, sick days, paid holidays, IPERS, personal days & other perks. It will be a good fit.
The kids are pretty excited to have me back at their school again. The only drawback to this job is that I won't be able to attend every party & field trip. I'll be able to pop in to see them during their parties and if I take a personal day, I can go on a field trip. The plus side is that I have the same schedule as the kids and I can see them throughout the day in the halls, lunch room, recess or assemblies.
So, bring on August 26th & take me back to work!!

SHOPPING, COOK OUT, POOL, BABYSIT, ZOO, GAME & KID'S DAY!!
Last week was spent with my family. On Tuesday, Kim & Drew came to my house to see Allie play her last softball game. She also came to buy herself a new car from Scott.
On Wednesday, we left to head to Kim & Michael's house for a few days. We stopped by the outlet mall on the way home & I found tons of good back to school stuff. That evening, we had a cookout with my whole family. What a great time!
We spent Thursday afternoon at Michael's co-worker's pool. The kiddos had a good time! We also got to babysit Drew that same morning & again that evening. He was perfect and we had a ball with him.
On Friday, we went to the zoo with the kids. After the zoo, we hung out at Michael & Kim's house. Allie went to spend the evening with my mom. Drew, Kim & I went to dinner & shopping. Jake, Michael & my dad went to a River Bandits game where Jake got a foul ball!! They had to leave the game early due to approaching storms. We lost power for about 3 hours at Michael & Kim's house & spent much of that time bailing water out of their sump pump that appeared to be about ready to overflow. Everything ended up fine.
Saturday brought the annual Kid's Day celebration complete with bowling, food, games & fun. After Kid's Day, we went to visit my Grandma in the nursing home and headed back home.
We had an awesome time.
